Three weeks have passed since our last Great Adventure, and I find myself in that nebulous post-goal haze that leaves the average Joe(sephina) feeling a little grumpy and shiftless.
I took almost two weeks off the bike, working on getting our old house ready for sale. (buy our house? Please?)
When I finally rode again, the only motivation in doing so was saving money by riding my bike to work. Oh, and participating in the Race to the Rock on my 3rd day (August 27), which this year was a 25 mile time trial around Lake Lure ! I had no business racing after such a hiatus but I did it anyway, because that is what silly is made of, and we all know I’m full of it (silly, that is). Since only a bunch of tired triathletes raced it (it was the 3rd in a triad of events) I managed to score the win, resulting in a prize of a tiny gold medal.
I convinced Andy to race, too, and he came away with the same result as me. The course was so awesome and the opportunity to ride up Chimney Rock so rare (bikes aren’t usually allowed) that neither of us cared (much) that there were no prizes. I really hope they do that again! Maybe next year I’ll do the triad, although it involves running and triathlons, blech!
Fast forward to Wednesday, August 31. Following up on some nagging knee pain that Andy had been experiencing for over a year, he visited his team doctor, who immediately shipped him off for an MRI. Prognosis: his right knee is Pretty Damn Messed Up. L 6 weeks of super light activity, and an immediate cessation of bike riding to allow the swelling in the bone to go down (!). Also, some crazy therapy that will hopefully allow him to avoid 60%-success-rate-surgery.
My biggest concern about all of this was how Andy would react to doctor-ordered time off the bike! The boy does not like days without exercise.
So, on Caturday, we made our first trip to the YMCA to start swimming. Day 1, while not a disaster, established the baseline of “needs much improvement”. Andy learned first hand just how important efficiency is, and I learned that despite 15 years of competitive experience, I have little idea how to help anyone improve their swimming ability. Needless to say, we’ve been watching YouTube videos and on Day 2 (today), I had him do breathing drills before every lap he swam.
What’s up next for me? I don’t know. I really don’t have any goals, although Andy tried to pick one for me – not sure if I can get motivated for it. I did get out for a 39 minute run in the rain today – hopefully I can walk tomorrow.
Hopefully some more interesting and frequent posts to come soon.

| One thing we are doing is massive purging of crap-we-don't-need. And that includes the original stereo from Andy's 1996 Dodge Caravan, which we got rid of in 2005. ! |
